Who's the New Girl? Episode 101: The Crawling Eye

the babes of MST3K

Having both an unhealthy obsession with classic pin-up style, which is coming back, and Mystery Science Theater 3000, which lives on forever, I've decided to combine my two lusts and create yet another series, this one based around pin-ups of the lovely ladies that starred in the b-movies MST3K skewered so hilariously. I will be taking on every single one of the relevant episodes, in order, because I have problems. Enjoy!

Janet Munro

Crow: 'Unst giveck und alst giveck'? What’s that supposed to mean?"
Tom: "It means the babes are coming."

Janet Munro was the quintessential British b-movie babe of the '50s. The daughter of a Scottish comedian, she was already on the stage in her teens, and signed by Walt Disney to a five-picture contract (!) at 18. Americans may remember her best from Darby O'Gill and the Little People and Swiss Family Robinson. In The Crawling Eye, she plays Anne Pilgrim, a psychic who, while on vacation in Geneva, senses something wrong with an ominous cloud that suddenly appears on a popular mountain. The alien eye creatures who live inside this new cloud realize she's sort of on to them, and invade the minds of the other cast members, who spend much of the movie trying to kill her.

Tragically, Anne's personal life story, while not involving giant alien eyes, was no picnic. There was a "Star Is Born" type situation with her first husband, and her second wanted her to quit the movies and do the wife and kids thing. Munro miscarried twice, got divorced, and drank herself to death by the age of 38. She did, however, make her mark in the film world, even garnering the Brit version of an Oscar for her turn as Pat Harris in the drama Life for Ruth.
